Occasionally, Excel thinks it wants to do something you may not need, such as when it separates out column headings for sorting.

In cases where you want those headings to remain as part of the sorting group, you only need to let Excel know by configuring it.

Step 1 Start Microsoft Excel and click into the first cell on the grid, A1.

Step 2 Type the first heading for the spreadsheet, such as Accounts Payable.

Step 3 Press the Tab key to move over one cell to the right, which puts you in cell B1.

Step 4 Continue to use the Tab key to move to cells until you have all of your column headers in place.

Step 5 Click into a cell to type the actual data for the spreadsheet.

For example, if you have accounts payable data, you would click into cell A2.

To add data to other columns, use the Tab key or click directly into the cell with the mouse.

Step 7 Highlight all of the cells you just typed, including the column headers.

Step 8 Click the Data tab and select the Sort button in the middle of the ribbon.

The highlighted area you just selected will automatically lose the headers, but youre about to fix this.

Step 9 Deselect the My data has headers box on the Sort window.

Step 10 Click the Sort by drop-down menu and choose how to sort.

Continue making sort options until you are satisfied and click the OK button.
